DIAMOND, STB USE S3 ACCELERATOR ON BOARDS

By CBR Staff Writer

San Jose, California-based Diamond Multimedia Systems Inc and STB Systems Inc, Richardson, Texas, have announced multimedia accelerator add-in boards based on the S3 Inc’s S3 Trio64V+ graphics and video accelerator. In addition, Diamond and STB have announced a hardware MPEG decoder upgrade, based on S3’s Scenic/MX2 MPEG decoder, that connects to the Trio64V+ multimedia accelerator via the S3 Scenic Highway local peripheral bus. These products will be the first available implementations of the Trio64V+ multimedia accelerator and Scenic/MX2 MPEG decoder. Last month Diamond Multimedia announced the latest addition to its family of Stealth64 multimedia accelerators, the Stealth64 Video 2001 series. This combines graphics and video acceleration with a modular design that enables connection of an MPEG decoder or a television tuner. Based on the S3 Trio64V+ multimedia accelerator, which incorporates the Scenic Highway interface, the Stealth64 Video 2001 series’ modular design is intended to meet the needs of a diverse customer base in the office and home markets by expanding the functions of the personal computer. The 1Mb Extended Data Out Dynamic RAM version of the Stealth64 Video 2001 series, the Stealth64 Video 2121XL, costs around $200, and the Stealth64 Video 2 201XL with 2Mb Dynamic RAM is $260. The PCI version of the Stealth64 Video 2001 series is out now, while the VESA Local Bus version is expected to ship this month. Based on the S3 Scenic/MX2 MPEG decoder, the optional MPEG Video Player 1100 series provides hardware decoding for full-motion video playback on any 80486 system or above. It features MPEG-1 audio and video decoding, audio and video synchronisation, and compact disk-quality audio. The MPEG Video Player 1100 series costs around $100 and is due out this month. Diamond’s television tuner, the DTV 1100 series, is also due out this month for $100.
