Deutsche Bundespost Telekom has bought half of AT&T Co’s 39% stake in UTEL, a venture aimed at expanding the telephone network in Ukraine, saying that its participation will enable Ukraine to expand its plans to cover all the state’s 25 provinces instead of just 13; the statement came a day after Ukraine inaugurated a satellite station that was built with US, Dutch and German firms, linking 16 Ukrainian cities with 167 countries; the Ukrainian Ministry for Posts & Telecommunication owns 51% of UTEL and Koninklijke PTT Nederland NV has 10%; Telekom is already participating in a joint venture to create a cellular network in 21 Ukrainian cities.
