Destiny Technology Inc of Milpitas, California has designed circuitry it says significantly improves the look of output from laser printers by finding and smoothing the jagged edges of raster images: Destiny’s Edge Enhancement Technology looks at line segments in a raster image and smooths out the jagged representation; the technique is built into a patented ASIC and uses dot modulation – it looks at a group of dots that make up an image and instructs the printer to make smaller dots in areas where cleaner edges are needed; the company claims that half of the top 10 laser printer and engine makers are working on designs that use the programmable chip, and although officials declined to name these manufacturers, it believes the new printers will appear by June or July; the D9001 is $20 for 1,000-up.
