Workstation sales worldwide grew by 40% in 1989, according to the latest report on the market from Dataquest Inc. The overall market reached $6,100m in 1989 compared with $4,300m in 1988, with Sun Microsystems, despite its mid-year troubles, increasing its lead, taking a 28.7% share of the market against 27% in 1988. Second came the Hewlett-Packard Co-Apollo combination, with 26.4% of the market, while DEC’s share went down to 15.9% compared with 17.6% in 1988. Fourth and also a faller, was Intergraph Corp, down to 6% from 6.8% in 1988, while fifth place Silicon Graphics rose a whole point to 5.2% from 4.2% in 1988. Dataquest expects 30% annual growth in sales over the next five years, compared with a 17% compound annual growth rate for the technical computer industry in total.
