Mobile, Alabama-based QMS Inc, the former Quality Micro Systems, is claiming to have the world’s first desktop colour laser printer: the QMS ColorScript Laser 1000 uses laser uses four toner-developer cartridges, one each for black, cyan, magenta and yellow, to create a palette of 16.7m colours, with the print system transferring the entire image to paper in a single pass for sharp colour registration and reliable operation; driven by an Intel Corp 80960CF RISC – identified by Newsbytes, the ColorScript can print at or near its rated engine speeds of eight pages-per-minute for monochrome and two pages per minute for colour; it costs $12,500 and cyan, magenta and yellow toner cartridges are $80 each for 2,000 images, and a black cartridge is $60 for 4,000 images.
