Meanwhile DeskStation Technology Inc is sticking to the Alpha 21164 RISC chip, and has launched its first dual processor, the Raptor Renegade, at Siggraph. The system has a 1.056Gb per second memory bus, implemented as a 128-bit, 66MHz data path, and the Lenexa, Kansas-based company says it is capable of using Alpha processors running at speeds of over 500MHz (433MHz is currently the fastest), with easy upgrades. There are eight full-length PCI slots, high speed serial ports, Ultra Wide SCSI I I disks and 16-bit CD quality sound. Suggested price is $18,000 for a single processor, $25,000 for dual processors. First shipments begin next month, with volumes in October.
