Dell has unveiled four new PowerEdge servers R910, M910, R810 and R815, based on industry standards and the x86 architecture.
According to Dell, the new PowerEdge R910 is a suitable platform for RISC/UNIX migrations, large database deployments and server virtualisation implementations. It is available with a four-socket Intel Nehalem-EX processor, up to 64 DIMM slots for memory, redundant power supplies and a failsafe embedded hypervisor.
The company said that the new four-socket Intel Xeon 7500 based PowerEdge M910 has capabilities to scale up to 512GB of RAM across 32 DIMM slots and is suitable for customers looking to maximise advantages of server virtualisation and consolidation. The R810 is suitable for customers looking to consolidate server hardware through virtualisation and deploy email messaging and database applications.
The R810 2U offering is available in two- or four-socket varieties and is powered by Intel Nehalem-EX processing technology. The new four-socket, 2U offering R815 is powered by AMD Opteron processors and offers memory scalability of up to 32 DIMMs with the ability to deploy up to 48 processing cores. It is suitable for virtualisation, high-performance computing, email messaging and database workloads.

In addition, Dell is also providing customers with a range of a la carte RISC migration services including workshops, readiness assessment, design, transition and implementation.
Matthew Eastwood, group vice president of enterprise platforms group at IDC, said: “With the latest X86 refresh from both Intel and AMD, the performance advantages of RISC-based UNIX servers continues to diminish. Dell, like other server vendors, is poised to take advantage of this trend by offering not only a compelling price/performance ratio but by also providing a robust portfolio of RISC migration services.”
