Reports have Austin, Texas-based Dell Computer Corp considering spinning its Unix work out into a stand alone division or subsidiary: the company is now up to Issue 2.2 of its version of Unix System V.4, which is regarded as one of the more robust implementations available for personal computers and personal computer-class servers. Issue 2.2 includes the X Window System 11.5, and both the Open Look and Motif graphical user interfaces. Dell is selling it bundled on its machines for $500 for two users, $800 for an unlimited user licence. Priced separately, it is $1,000 for two users, $1,300 for the unlimited licence. Dell is planning to migrate to Solaris 2.0-on-iAPX-86, starting with a $100 Solaris Developers’ bundle later this year. No word on reported plans to take NeXTstep.
