Dell to pay $10,000 to encourage computer recycling

Computer conglomerate Dell will provide grants valued at $10,000 to three US college and university customers for computer recycling events taking place on campus this spring.

By CBR Staff Writer

The grants are part of the Dell Higher Education Recycling Leadership Awards, an initiative that recognizes commitment to leadership in the areas of technology innovation, environmental sustainability or campus community. According to the company, its primary goal is raise awareness of responsible ways of disposing of old computers.

Recipients of the Dell awards are the University of California, the University of Colorado and Miami Dade College, who will each conduct a computer collection event at the end of the academic calendar year to coincide with the student move-out period.

As part of the grant, the winners will receive technical assistance with the planning of their recycling events in a series of educational forums led by the National Recycling Coalition (NRC).

We’re seeing more colleges and universities that recognize the need to provide recycling options to students moving out of their dorms and apartments at the end of the school year, said Kate Krebs, executive director of the NRC. From textbooks to computers to couches, these materials can often be recycled or reused, as long as they are kept out of landfills in the first place.
