Dell Computer Corp said yesterday it had secured an exclusive contract, worth up to $100m, to be the exclusive supplier of PCs to First Union Corp, the US’s sixth-largest bank. Under its three-year deal, the number-two PC maker will replace First Union’s 65,000 computers, housed in 2,400 offices across 12 states, with a selection of its desktop, deskside and notebook computers.
Round Rock, Texas-based Dell displaces computer reseller, Inacom Corp, which had been the incumbent PC supplier of First Union. The deal may be upgraded to encompass Dell’s servers once they are configured to meet the banking company’s requirements, First Union said.
Dell’s success with corporate customers over the past year, which has included supply contracts with Boeing Co, Motorola Inc and Ford Motor Co, is said to have underpinned the OEM’s recent rise to usurp Compaq Corp as number-one PC maker in the US.
