Dell plans to double headcount in India

Leading PC maker Dell Inc plans to double its number of workers in India during the next three years, the company's founder and chairman told local reporters yesterday.

By CBR Staff Writer

This is in line with Dell chief executive Kevin Rollins’ comments in late January that the company would hire an additional 5,000 workers in the country during the next two years.

Dell chair Michael Dell said yesterday the company would employ as many as 20,000 workers in the country within three years, up from about 10,000 today.

India produces over 200,000 engineers and we see that as an asset for our hardware and software activities, Dell said, reported Reuters.

Rollins previously announced that Round Rock, Texas-based Dell would set up a manufacturing facility in the country to boost local sales, but the company has not given details on where it would be located.

Dell did not provide details on where in India the company would add workers. But Rollins previously said that as many as 1,000 workers would be recruited for a new call center near New Delhi. Dell also plans to double its 300 employee-strong workforce at an existing product-testing center in Bangalore, Rollins had said.

He also previously said that India would be a hub for Dell software development and back office operations.
