Just as Gateway Inc CEO Ted Waitt predicted last week, Dell Computer Corp has launched an e-commerce web site to sell up to 30,000 computer-related products, in addition to its range of PCs, servers and workstations. Waitt made the prediction at the launch of his company’s offering, which involved a partnership with NECX, but Dell says its web site – Gigabuys.com – is all its own work and is up and running today. Gateway’s SpotShop.com is still just selling Gateway-branded gifts. The shopping cart on dell.com will be linked to gigabuys.com and the company will also offer customized versions of the web site to its corporate customers through its Premier Pages. Dell currently generates $14m or 25% of sales through its web site each day and plans to have that up to 50% of the total by the end of 2000. And in case you’re wondering where the name comes from, the company says it is currently the name of Dell’s factory outlet in its home town of Austin, Texas.
