Dell Computer Corp will be the second company to offer sell a server running Oracle Corp’s Raw Iron dedicated database appliance – officially known as Oracle 8i – which runs atop a cut-down Sun Solaris operating system. Details were not available as we went to press. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said yesterday the deal had just been inked. Hewlett-Packard Co, which last week became the first of the Raw Iron club to announce product plans, says the market for such dedicated appliances is an incremental business segment. Raw Iron services will be available to other devices connected to the network, HP says. Oracle is now saying its Oracle 8i database will ship next quarter, after a 60-day delay.
