Dell Computer Corp’s first quarter figures (see page seven) demonstrate that it is still possible to make money out of personal computers, but the current market dictates that only a handful of companies that got the formula right for the present climate can do so – and will do so at the expense of a host of others; history also teaches us that what is right for today’s markets will likely be quite wrong for those of tomorrow, so that to stay ahead of the game, companies must anticipate where the market is going; Dell’s 109% increase in sales was split pretty evenly between the US and international – US sales rose 116% to $226.3m, international sales rose 99% to $139.8m.
