Dell Computer Corp is expecting to break away from the WinTel hegemony that has been its bread and butter and will produce more small internet enabled computing devices in the future. Dell’s chief product strategist, Eric Harslem, told the Australian Financial Review that many consumers were buying PCs just to get on the internet and never used the additional functions. It makes sense for Dell to start to produce smaller devices designed solely for internet access, he said. Dell is examining the practicality of producing wireless, keyboardless tablet devices that do away with many standard PC features. He said that these devices were unlikely to use the Intel Pentium processor and Microsoft Windows combination currently omnipotent in the consumer PC market because the power consumed by the Intel x86 design makes it impractical for smaller machines.
