Dell does AMD notebook

Without fanfare, Dell Inc last week launched its first notebook powered by a microprocessor from Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

By CBR Staff Writer

Until now, the computer maker, one of the largest in the US, exclusively sold Intel-powered notebooks.

The Inspiron 1501, Dell comes with either AMD’s budget Sempron, mobile Turion 64, or dual-core Turion 64 X2 chips. It is targeted to small and mid-sized businesses and consumers. A low-end configuration with a Semprom chip, 80GH hard drive and 512MB of memory has a $549 price tag.

Dell first announced in May that it was breaking away from its Intel-only strategy and planned to sell AMD-based servers, which it began to do so last month.

AMD is currently suing Intel for allegedly abusing its dominant market position and bullying OEMs to use its chips and not AMD’s. The case is ongoing, and is scheduled to go to trial in 2009.
