Dell Computer Corp says it’s selling more than $1m of computers from its web site every day and that sales from traffic through its home pages is increasing at a rate of 20% every month. Web surfers have been able to design, price and purchase computer systems as well as obtain online support over the web since July 1996. Dell estimates 225,000 visit the site each week specifically to configure a system and get a price quote. Dell says the bulk of its online sales come from home consumers and small businesses who are purchasing simple PC and servers. Dell’s Dimension desktop PC’s are currently its biggest sellers. Dell attributes the success of this internet-direct method of selling to the convenience and savings it offers the buyer.
