Dell was already OEMing CommVault’s core backup software, but is now reselling the entire suite of modules in CommVault’s Simpana 7.0 software that was released this summer.

The only other backup software that Dell’s Product Group currently OEMs is Symantec’s Backup Exec. Although Dell’s Software and Periperals Group resells Symantec’s other backup tool NetBackup, and EMC’s NetWorker software, that group does not offer support or services for the products it sells.

Our View

This is another sign that Dell is stepping up its storage focus. Only last month Dell launched its first in-house developed disk array, and called out its CEO Micheal Dell to launch the device.

The move also represents an endorsement for CommVault’s software. Dell clearly believes that despite already having Symantec’s NetbackUp Exec on its books, it is worth taking on more management and support overhead to be able to also offer the full suite of CommVault software.
