Continuing its push upmarket, Dell Computer Corp has unveiled a Dell Graphics Performance Series, graphics subsystems for all the firm’s 80386-based machines. There are five primary components: the GPX 1024/16 graphics accelerator board with 16 colours and 512Kb of memory; the GPX 1024/256 graphics accelerator board with 256 colours and 1Mb of memory; a VGA Option Module; and 16 and 19 multi-frequency Graphics Performance Display. The controller boards use the Texas Instruments’ TMS34010 co-processor to provide on-screen resolutions up to 1024 by 768 resolution in either interlaced or non-interlaced modes. Dell claims the new products are significantly faster than VGA, extended VGA or IBM 8514/A; a comprehensive set of device drivers is standard; the new boards cost from $1,100 to $2,500.
