Dell unveils PowerEdge C8000 series 4U shared infrastructure application

PowerEdge C8000 Series allows mixing and matching of compute, GPU/coprocessors and storage sleds in one chassis

By CBR Staff Writer

Dell has introduced PowerEdge C8000 Series, the 4U shared infrastructure application that allows the mixing and matching of compute, GPU/coprocessors and storage sleds in one chassis.

The new shared infrastructure application is designed to undertake high workloads that require high performance per watt and flexibility in configuration, such as high-performance computing (HPC) and big data applications.

PowerEdge C8000 series claims to deliver mix of resources, save on space, energy and refresh rates and allow customers to run their data centres at higher operating temperatures.

With the new application, customers can now pack more compute power in less space than traditional 1U servers, with the cores, memory and I/O expansion needed for peak workload performance.

In addition, the PowerEdge C8000 Series claimed to provide customers with up to four times the server density when compared with other applications.

Dell said the shared infrastructure reduces power and cooling costs and enables customer to refresh with the latest components without having to replace the entire chassis.

PowerEdge C8000 shared infrastructure chassis holds up to eight single-wide sleds or four double-wide sleds, including PowerEdge C8220 compute sled, PowerEdge C8220X compute/GPU sled and PowerEdge C8000XD storage sled.

Each compute sled is equivalent to a standard server built with a processor, memory, network interface, baseboard management controller and local hard drive storage.

The C8220 compute sled will enable up to eight C8220 nodes to slide into the C8000 chassis mounted on single-width sleds, delivering the compute power of up to 16 next-generation processors in just 4U of rack space.

C8220X compute/GPU sled increases the performance and compute/memory density per rack, as well as allows the use of GPUs and other accelerators.

PowerEdge C8000XD storage sled is suitable for workloads requiring flexible storage expansion and fits up to 1.4x more local storage in 4U of rack space.
