Dell has unveiled the Precision R5500, a desktop workstation that has remote desktop like features.
The Dell Precision R5500 provides a centrally located, IT managed ISV-certified workstation which can be accessed from anywhere. The remote access technology centralises engineering and graphics applications in one location.
Dell senior product manager Don Maynard said the new offereing, targeted at design and content creation companies, could reduce deployment of multiple workstations for businesses.
Maynard added that the Precision R5500 workstation both renders and delivers pixels to client PCs over a network.
The workstation delivers graphics in both 2D/3D formats to Dell’s FX100 thin client using the PC-over-IP remote graphics protocol, or to desktops and laptops with VMware’s View software. However the quality of the graphics will depend on the bandwidth.
The workstation can also be used in mining and health care.
The Precision R5500 is also a high-end desktop. It is a dual-socket workstation with up to 12 cores of processing power. It holds up to 192GB of ECC memory and can have two Nvidia Quadro graphics cards. The R5500 supports up to five SATA and six SAS drives and the workstation is fully-remote power manageable.
The R5500 is compatible with Windows 7, Vista, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 operating systems. It starts at $2,551 and will be available on 3 May 3 in the US and EMEA markets, and 10 May in the Asia-Pacific markets.
Del has also launched two new mobile workstations, the Precision M4600 and M6600, that are desktop alternatives. The M4600 and M6600 include 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch screens, respectively, and run on Intel’s Core i5 and i7 processors. Both support up to 32GB of DDR3-1333 in four DIMM slots. Both also offer a range of choices from AMD’s FirePro Mobility GPUs and NVIDIA’s Quadro GPUs.
They also will come with multiple USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports, and provision for multiple monitors.
The M4600 starts at $1,678 , while the M6600 starts at $2,158. The mobile workstations will be available worldwide on 10 May.
