With less than perfect timing, DEC chose IBM Somersault Day to launch its VAX 6200s, and with them the rather late true symmetrical multiprocessing release of VMS 5.0. The company also revealed that a symmetrical multiprocessing version of its Ultrix Unix was weeks rather than months away. DEC will also be announcing new terms for software licences, based on the performance rather than the number of processors in an installation. Details of the announcement are in page two.
