Digital Equipment Corp Russia has signed a contract with the Institute of High Energy Physics in Moscow. The first stage will be to deliver components and spares for the VAX minicomputers already at the Institute. Later DEC will ship several other VAX computers. According to a spokeswoman for Digital Russia, the contract was signed at Comtek after months of negotiations. The value of the contract has not been revealed. DEC claims that there was a big interest in the new Alpha chip among banking and manufacturing customers in Russia. None of the Alpha-based systems are currently shippable to Russia because of CoCom restrictions. DEC says that it hope permission for shipping Alpha-based systems (with licences) will be possible starting later this year.
