Digital Equipment Corp confirmed on Friday that it is in talks to sell part of its fibre-optic network in New England to the Metro unit of MCI Communications Corp. The network links manufacturing, office and research sites around New England, but is distinct from its main internal communications network. MCI would operate it for DEC while offering spare capacity on it to other customers. The sale would be a very cautious start to DEC’s planned exercise to sell assets for cash – the network is only valued at $15m. At the board meeting on Thursday, everyone was said to be agreed on the company’s latest restructuring plan, but no details are to be revealed for now.
