DEC says that it will bring out three R3000 RISC-based workstations in its DECstation line spanning the full performance range later this year. The new machines will use 33MHz and 40MHz versions of the chip and replace all existing models and will be designed with removable processor and memory modules so that they can be upgraded to the 64-bit R4000 RISC when that becomes available next year. The company said that the top model of the R3000-based line will deliver double the performance of the DECstation 5000 Model 200, which is rated at 24 MIPS. There will also be a new RISC server more powerful than the DECsystem-5500. According to Electronic News, the biggest headache for DEC with the release of an early version of OSF/1 to developers yesterday was whether to call the thing OSF/1 or retain the Ultrix name.
