Digital Equipment Corp has announced that it will be making a grant of $1m to the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation’s Division of Information Technology: the money will be used in the division’s Centre for Spatial Information Systems Research to support research into visualisation, modelling decision and support – DEC will provide both equipment and cash and the Division already uses a MasPar Inc massively parallel machine; CSIRO is also expected to announce agreements with four Australian companies to market a range of products it has developed in the fields of image processing and geographic information systems; DEC put up the money because foreign firms wishing to sell to the Commonwealth government are obliged to invest in partnerships to develop Australian technology and competitiveness.
