Digital Equipment Corp yesterday duly got its broad-brush price- slashing program on the road (CI No 3,033), slashing the price and enhancing the performance of its mid-range AlphaServer RISC family of 64-bit application, database and Internet-intranet servers. The AlphaServer 4100 5/400 Windows NT systems are cut by up to 25%, and now begin at $38,040. The AlphaServer 4000 5/300 systems are down 23% at from $30,040, and add-on memory modules for the AlphaServer 4000, 4100 and 2000 are reduced by up to 29%. The AlphaServer 2000 and new 2100A LP mid-range are now now available with the Alpha 21164 5/375 processor: the 5/375 executes 14.4 SPECfp95 and 11.6 SPECint95. Add-on memory prices for the AlphaServer 2000s are cut by 20%. All systems now contain a 7,200rpm 4.3Gb disk drive as standard, and all 4000 and 4100 systems now come with twice the memory capacity of earlier versions. With the new 2Gb memory modules, the two- CPU AlphaServer 4000s now have a 4Gb memory capacity, and the four- CPU AlphaServer 4100 offers up to 8Gb of memory, the firm said.
