DEC, SGI LICENSE COM

By CBR Staff Writer

Digital Equipment Corp – plus new parent Compaq Computer Corp – is hell-bent on migrating its VAX user based to Windows NT running on Alpha or Intel servers and DEC says it has already tested Microsoft Corp’s COM component object model running on its proprietary OpenVMS operating system. It promises a beta on Digital Unix soon. DEC says it has already demonstrated NT clients and servers running COM applications communicating directly with an OpenVMS AlphaServer running COM applications. DEC says COM (DCOM) will be available for OpenVMS and Digital Unix later in the year. Silicon Graphics Inc, which is just getting its feet wet in Microsoft technology and porting OpenGL to Windows NT, says it will have COM integrated with its Irix Unix by mid-1998.
