DEC REVEALS ASYNCHRONOUS TRANSFER MODE PLANS

By CBR Staff Writer

Digital Equipment Corp has previewed three Asynchronous Transfer Mode products in what it says will be a complete line of local and wide area Asynchronous Transfer network products. The trio includes an Asynchronous Transfer Mode switch for controlling data flow; a TURBOchannel adaptor for communication between peripherals (for example, Alpha AXP workstations) in an Asynchronous Transfer Mode environment; and a GIGAswitch module, which enables the GIGAswitch system to integrate traffic and FDDI switching onto local and distant Asynchronous Transfer Mode arteries. The GIGAswitch Asynchronous Transfer Mode module was first hinted at in March. DEC says the three products will be available at the beginning of 1994, but pricing details have yet to be released.
