DEC, which by November had narrowed its search for a high end OEM tape drive to two offerings – IBM’s 3480 and a rival drive from Hitachi (CI No 821), is now believed to have settled on the IBM drive to replace its existing reel-to-reel models. It is expected to announce a model based on the 3480 shortly. The OEM contract with IBM is thought to be worth around $50m over its life.
