Digital Equipment Corp has been fleshing out a few more details about the roadmap for its AltaVista Enterprise architecture, which is the web server, intranet search and firewall software which was derived from its web search engine technology of the same name. In addition to the upgrades to its virtual private networking and intranet search products announced last week, DEC is developing a high-availability clustered version of its web server for both DEC Unix and Windows NT and Netscape Communications Corp’s and Microsoft Corp web servers. The front- end will be based on the AltaVista search technology. The product will be released this summer, said Don Harbert, VP of DEC’s internet business unit. Harbert also told us that more security products are due this summer to add to the firewall and virtual private networking (VPN) products already available. The VPN product is called Tunnel 98. Harbert expressed his dissatisfaction with the awkward name DEC had chosen for the upgrade to its intranet search technology – it’s now called Intranet Search 97B, as it was not considered a significant enough upgrade to be granted the ’98’ moniker.
