Now that DEC is almost ready with its full multiprocessing release 5.0 of VMS, the company is expected to come out shortly with a VAX 6000 line of machines built around the microprocessor used in the new MicroVAX 3000. The machines will use the VAXBI bus and will cover the performance range presently filled by the VAX 8250, 8350, 8530 and 8550. Analysts contacted by the Wall Street Journal expect one- to four-processor models dubbed the 6210, 6220, 6230 and 6240, and expect DEC to rush them out ahead of IBM’s launch of Silverlake so as to prevent that machine making any inroads into its mid-range user base.
