Digital Equipment Corp, which has launched legal action against Intel over the design of its new processor, is releasing a PC faster than any equipped with a Pentium II. Its subsidiary in Japan will introduce a PC running Window NT with a 64-bit Alpha microprocessor for around $2,500. Developed by the US computer maker, the model is expected to debut in Japan and the US in October. DEC’s Alpha microprocessor, so far installed in large and midrange computers, is said to be 60% faster than the Intel Corp’s Pentium II chip, which has a clock speed of 266 MHz. DEC has taken court action to accuse Intel of wilfully and deliberately infringing ten of its patents in the design of the Pentium II.
