DEC OFFERS MID-RANGE PROCESSOR UPGRADES

Digital Equipment Corp has a new 466MHz Alpha RISC to upgrade AlphaServer 4000 and 4100 systems, which currently use a 400MHz processor and US PC Week hears a 600MHz processor is almost ready to go. As for the AlphaServer 4000s, they will be upgraded in April with a new 64-bit PCI inputoutput board to provide a twofold increase in throughput. The option will upgrade the server to four independent channels with 16 slots (current models have two channels and eight slots – and will be $16,000. The new 466MHz AlphaServer 4000 and 4100 models will be between $49,500 and $57,500. Upgrades for existing models start at $8,000.
