Now that it has bitten the bullet and ended its unofficial no lay-offs policy, a steady trickle of Digital Equipment Corp people are getting their pink slips or cards, and the company this week made its first lay-offs of sales and sales support people – 800 are to go in the US. The company says it hired too many people in sales operations over the past 18 months, taking on 2,300 to 2,500, and it needs to redress the balance – it will take a charge for the lay-offs with its fiscal fourth quarter figures due on July 25.
