Digital Equipment Corp has launched the Gigaswitch/ATM system and the ATMworks 750 network interface adaptor, claiming they deliver the highest-performance Asynchronous Transfer Mode network capabilities in the industry and saying they provide customers with a cost-effective way of migrating to Asynchronous Transfer Mode from existing shared and switched local area networks. Gigaswitch/ATM is described as a robust, high-performance 10.4Gbps switch ideally suited for use in backbone local area networks and high-performance workgroups, providing customers with network stability because it is the only switch in the industry that eliminates data loss due to network congestion, DEC asserts. The ATMworks 750 Network Interface Adaptor board is claimed to be the fastest 155Mbps Asynchronous network interface adaptor in the industry, providing connections for DEC 3000 AXP systems, and is the first in a family of adaptors. Prices for the Gigaswitch/ATM System begin at $25,740 with a price per 155Mbps port of under $2,600. The ATMworks 750 is $2,500.Both can be ordered now for ships in 90 days, and switches and adaptors are already with 30 customers in 13 countries in a partnering programme.
