DEC has launched its DECstation family of MS-DOS desktop computers featuring the DECstation 200, an 8MHz 80286 system, the DECstation 300, a mid-range 16MHz system built around an 80386X processor, and the DECstation 350, a high-end 20MHz 80386 system: the computers are all built by Olivetti for the European market (Tandy is manufacturing a different but compatible desktop range for the US market), and are intended to fill in the gap in DEC’s mid-range offerings – that being the excuse for their somewhat mundane specifications; the range can, however, display X-window applications via DECwindows – prices range from UKP1679 to UKP5584 and the first UK orders have already rolled in from the pharmaceutical company Smith & Nephew, which wants 100, and Durham University, in for 40.
