Digital Equipment Corp yesterday accompanied fiscal third quarter figures that saw it just stay in the black with news that it has shipped its first top-end VAX 9000 – and it says that the machine is performing better than it expected when it announced it back in October. The company has also shipped its 10,000th VAX 6000, making the line the fastest-selling VAX ever. DEC says that demand from overseas customers remains firm, particularly in Europe and Japan. The company warns that there may be more restructuring charges on top of the $150m pre-tax taken to cover early retirements, and the figures went down extremely well, with the shares leaping $2 or 2.5%.
