Digital Equipment Corp has introduced an Internet bridge-router designed to give businesses high-speed access to the Internet over standard cable television systems: it is based on the ChannelWorks Bridge, which delivers 10Mbps Ethernet-standard connections, and provides access to and routing of Internet traffic at speeds significantly greater than those of traditional telephone company-leased lines; the company believes the high data transfer rates of cable television are ideal for quickly retrieving and sending applications such as video and multimedia, and says the ChannelWorks Internet Brouter will be available in the US within the next 60 days at $7,000 and will be launched worldwide later this year.
