Digital Equipment Corp’s settlement with Intel Corp over the Alpha chip did little to instill confidence in the long term future of the part, but at Comdex, DEC was highlighting the announcements of new, low-cost personal computers based on the Alpha 21164PC microprocessor by 14 systems vendors. The companies are: AHCS International, A-Trend Technology Co, Alta Technology Inc, Aspen Systems Inc, Carrera Computers Inc, DCG Computers Inc, Enorex Microsystems Inc, Maxvision Corp, Microway Inc, Multiwave Technology Inc, Polywell Computer Inc, Tri-Star Computer Inc, Visual Technology Inc and Vobis Microcomputer AG. Systems go for less than $2,600. The 21164PC is co-designed by Mitsubishi Electric Co and also marketed by Samsung Electric Co. Mitsubishi is offering board products using the parts, aimed at the high volume system market.
