Costs a fortune to count people these days, and the flags are flying in Maynard, Massachusetts over the award to DEC of the contract to supply computers for the 1990 US census, which is worth $80m over six years and includes VAX 8000s for the Bureau of Census centre in Suitland, Maryland and for major regional centres, and 450 MicroVAX IIs for regional offices, software and services: the kit is to be delivered next month, and the system will be proved in this year’s economic and agricultural census.
