Digital Equipment Corp has achieved what sounds like an emulation breakthrough with a software translation technology that will enable Windows95 applications written for iAPX-86-based computers to run on its Alpha RISCs under Windows NT once they have been run through the translator. Called FX!32, it is claimed to give Alpha users access to all existing 32-bit Windows applications, which it says will run up to 40% faster. FX!32 will be bundled with Windows NT for Alpha from the middle of next year. Users will still need Insignia Solutions Ltd’s SoftWindows to run 16-bit applications.
