Digital Equipment Corp has announced an enhanced set of server, client and network management software that will be bundled with its Prioris iAPX-86-based servers and commercial desktop personal computers. There are three main elements to the software. The first of these, Server-WORKS Manager, incorporates DEC’s Manage-WORKS, and is said to extend server management to provide network management functions, including the ability to support Simple Network Management Protocol-based devices from anywhere on the local area network. It is said to be compatible with IBM Corp’s NetView/6000 AIX (and DEC’s PolyCenter Manager/NetView implementation of it), and Hewlett-Packard Co’s OpenView UX. The second component, ServerWORKS Quick Launch, is a CD-ROM-based utility suite intended to simplify configuration of the Prioris personal computer servers. Finally, ClientWORKS is the new name for DEC’s desktop management applications, including its implementation of the Desktop Management Interface. The company claims to have extended the interface to provide the only available integration with Microsoft Corp’s System Management Server. Client-WORKS analyses personal computer configuration and provides enhanced asset management.
