Digital Equipment Corp has come up trumps, delivering on its promise to make available key components of the Open Software Foundation’s Distributed Computing Environment by providing the location address of the key communications and application development components. Both the Distributed Computing Environment remote procedure call and the Interface Definition Language compiler are available via the Internet. Access to the key components of Distributed Computing Environment are royalty-free and open. The Distributed Computing Environment provides the communications infrastructure for building distributed applications that communicate with other Distributed Computing Environment applications. Interface Definition Language is used to generate client and server application components, needed for applications to run in the Distributed Computing Environment environment. All this promises application portability and interoperability across hetrogenous systems.
