Digital Equipment Corp finally announced that fire sale of price cuts on its Alpha microprocessors, slashing tags by 40% to 50% effective immediately – although our impression is that large-lot buyers of the chips have been paying these prices for several weeks. The parts the company is consigning to the bargain basement are the ones that vie with the Pentium Pro in the Windows NT market. The 300MHz Alpha 21164-300 is slashed to $395 from $695, the 366MHz version is cut to $495 from $950, and the 433MHz to $750 from $1,492 for 1,000-up quantities in each case.
