Given that Digital Equipment Corp and Microsoft Corp are such good buddies, itsnot surprising DEC has chosen to make its Alta Vista Mail server seamlessly communicate with Microsoft Exchange, rather than the more popular Lotus Notes. Expect DEC to add Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP4)and List Server capabilities by September for cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail. DEC is positioning its mail server for small to medium businesses without messaging capabilities and firms which don’t have in-house technology experts, promising the average user can set-up the system. It also expects to sell to Internet service providers with on- premise equipment customers. Alta Vista Mail costs $500 per server and a 60-day free trial can be downloaded from its Web site.
