DEC has gone one better than IBM with its Cohesion software engineering answer to AD/Cycle – recognising that IBM mainframes are a fact of life, it doesn’t see why IBM software developers shouldn’t get the benefit of DEC’s skills in and aids for software engineering, so the DEC offering will enable users to develop applications for IBM mainframes, for most of the widely-used microprocessors, and for supercomputers, as well as for the VAX and for its MIPStations. The announcement, as had been suggested (CI No 1,446), was made last Tuesday – DEC just failed to tell anybody about it. The DEC name for its integrated software engineering schema is Cohesion, and like IBM, it has turned to third parties for some of the elements, but the CDD/Repository distributed repository with an object-oriented interface will not be available until the first half of 1991, as is CDD/Administrator.
