Datawind, a provider of wireless web access products and services, has launched a new netbook UbiSurfer that reportedly offers free access to the internet from anywhere in the UK.
The UbiSurfer is priced at £160 and is available from Maplin retail stores and Ideal TV home shopping. It comes with 30 hours of free surfing a month for the initial 12 months.
Datawind said that it has teamed up with Vodafone to offer an embedded SIM and GPRS modem. This allows users to access the internet anywhere a mobile phone signal is available. It also offers the capability to connect through Wi-Fi and LAN.
The company claims that its acceleration technology helps to deliver the web pages faster than other portable netbooks on a mobile network, at five to seven seconds per page.
The new netbook comes with a seven-inch TFT wide screen display with 800 by 480 pixel resolution and weighs around 700g. It comes with a choice of piano black or rubberised matt finish and features a full QWERTY keyboard, byan Arm processor and Linux operating system. It offers 1GB SSD storage plus 25GB of online storage.
Other features include SD/SDHC card reader, a built in microphone and duel speaker system stereo sound earphone jack. Its battery is expected to offer up to four hours run time.
