Datatrend Technologies has entered into a partnership with ScaleMP to offer integrated virtual SMP services based on vSMP Foundation. Datatrend integrates IBM’s BladeCenter or iDataPlex server platforms with ScaleMP’s vSMP Foundation virtualisation software.

According to Datatrend, the new offering aggregates multiple x86 server blades into a single virtual high-end system for the high-peformance computing (HPC) market providing customers with an alternative to symmetrical multiprocessor (SMP) systems.

Based on IBM’s BladeCenter or iDataPlex server, the new offering scales up to 112 cores with 1.3TB of RAM and 8.4TB of internal storage, running a single Linux operating system. In addition, the new offering also includes vSMP Foundation Productivity Pack that provides operating system tuning and other HPC utilities, the company said.

Shai Fultheim, founder and president of ScaleMP, said: The combination of IBM hardware and the ScaleMP software solution by Datatrend enables HPC customers to minimise the hassles in getting a HPC environment to production.

“This solution minimises the skill sets required to setup HPC clusters and also offers an economic alternative to mid-range SMPs, such as SGI’s Altix systems. We are very excited about the partnership with Datatrend, as it allows us to expand virtual SMP offerings into additional markets.
