The world market for pre-packaged internet servers is expected to reach $13.27bn in 1998, research firm Dataquest Inc has said. Sun Microsystems apparently has the biggest slice of the pie, mopping up 22.3% of the market. Hewlett-Packard Co is close behind with 19.6%. But Dataquest had encouraging words for the many net server start-ups springing up around the place, saying it’s not yet too late for vendors to enter this market. Aspirants do need to think big. Servers defined as midrange accounted for $3.97bn worth of revenues in 1997, compared with $1.6bn for entry-level boxes. Dataquest says it expects this midrange domination to continue through to 2002.
